Leveling terraces on adjustable pedestals innovative technology for making terraces.

Everyone who has ever made outdoor floors has encountered the problem: uneven ground levels. This topic is important not only because of the drainage of water from the surface of the ground and terrace. Often this problem is overlooked in the workmanship and eventually the sloping floor is leveled in a random and ineffective way.

The ideal solution is a horizontally laid floor, keeping the ground under the floor in a slope consistent for the drainage of rain. Floors laid horizontally are characteristic of surfaces laid inside buildings. However, would it not be comfortable to use the floor horizontally laid also outside?  The roof pedestal system helps you do this. The human eye and labyrinth are so sensitive that they can sense even the slightest tilt and unevenness of the floor.

Therefore, for outdoor terrace floors, you need an element that will raise the final floor / terrace to the appropriate height and cause that the upper surface of the terrace floor will be horizontally or with a very slight slope. This element is a support for terraces. Below is a diagram which presents the essence of a raised ventilated terrace on adjustable plastic pedestals.
Since the ground differs in height between harvests and the lowest - the place where rainwater drains from the terrace, the base must be able to adjust the height so that the terrace surface remains horizontal.

We also distinguish support pads without height levels. Washers for fixed height panels that function as spacers to set the gap between panels and act to distance panels from load that do not have aesthetic features, e.g. roofing felt. In this way, a floating floor is laid - a ventilated terrace, otherwise a raised terrace.

Structure of the adjustable pedestals: the base of the pedestals is set on the terrace floor, the ring that gives the height adjustable pedestal, the upper part of the terrace pedestal on which the terrace floor is supported.

An additional upper part compatible with the finish is an element that helps on the installation of the final terrace floor e.g. tiles or joists.

Leveling terraces on adjustable pedestals - a new solution, but known for a long time.

Although the use of adjustable pedestals for terrace construction is innovative in modern construction, compatible roof pedestal systems for the installation of raised floors are still being improved. In ancient times, solutions for raising floors to the ground were known.

An example is, for example, Roman baths, in which floor tiles were laid, supported by smaller tiles stacked so as to raise the floor up. The purpose of this floor lifting was to allow warm air to enter under the floor in thermal baths and thus achieve underfloor heating.

Terrace with tiles or bonded terrace - what to choose?

Advantages and disadvantages of the systems.

We often come across questions about what is it like - a ventilated terrace with tiles or a terrace made of glued tiles (bonded terrace)? Which is better to choose? Will a really ventilated terrace made of terrace tiles last much more? In which system is it easier to lay the boards?

Specially for you, we have prepared a comparison of two mounting systems for terrace cladding - a terrace with tiles with a terrace made of tiles mounted on an adhesive mortar.

This article you find here.

Where you can use spacers for terrace tiles. A universal solution for each terrace.

Outdoor floors - what is this?

Outdoor floors are surfaces located outside buildings that are exposed to changing weather and humidity conditions, changing insolation and temperatures depending on the time of day and year.

We can call all external floors: balconies, terraces, terrace stairs, terraces made of ceramic, concrete and stone tiles, wooden and composite terraces, leisure terraces, garden terraces, viewing terraces, city fountains, garden fountains, interactive fountains, footbridges for pedestrians, boulevards , piers, recreational areas, playgrounds, outdoor company exhibitions, entrances / exits from buildings, recreational patios in buildings or between buildings, terraces on the roofs of buildings, green terraces, inverted terraces.

Here are some examples:

When will I know that I should use pedestals or spacers for tiles and joists?

Whenever there is a need to level the outer surfaces of terraces or balconies.

Are you planning to align the level of the terrace with the floor inside the building?

Are you planning to raise the terrace to height and do it professionally, simply, safely and permanently?

Are you planning to install tiles, ceramic tiles, wooden boards, composite boards, ceramic boards and do you want them not to slide apart or collapse in the future?

Can't you load the ground with a leveling structure that is too heavy?

You have used an anti-moisture membrane and you cannot damage it under any circumstances?

Do you have roofing felt on your terrace or balcony that cannot be damaged?

Are you planning to install media under the terrace?

Do you want to distribute cables that carry electricity to the garden under the cladding of the tiles?

Or maybe you want to provide water to irrigate plants in your garden?
In all the cases described above, the terrace stands, i.e. the adjustable and fixed DD Pedestals terrace pedestals, will help you.

They will help you meet all the requirements of your terrace or balcony. You will improve its aesthetic appearance as well as technical and operational conditions.

Are you planning a new terrace and do not know if you can use terrace adjustable pedestals?

The use of leveling plastic pedestals and the ground for the terrace, the correct ground for the terrace, the ground for the terrace must be even and stable. This means that you cannot lay the terrace directly on unprepared e.g. clay soil, sod, grass or moss, not hardened, which after the first rain will erode and the terrace will begin to deform or collapse.

The adjustable pedestals will not stand steady, neither on grass nor on stones or debris. The quality of the substrate under the terrace translates directly into the quality of terrace use. The stability of the substrate for the terrace is the most important element.
Terrace height - the terrace height is another very important parameter.

The height from the planned ground to the entrance to the building may be too small to set a adjustable pedestals, and on it you must additionally take into account, add the height of the planned slab, joist or plank. Know the height of the leveling plastic pedestals, check whether the height of the adjustablepedestals will raise your terrace to height, which you have to overcome. Remember that the leveling lastic pedestals have different heights, the adjustable pedestals can be extended with a screw-in sleeve in the base.

Installation of raised terraces. Planning a raised terrace familiarize yourself with the technology of raised terraces the construction of raised terraces is proven, trouble-free, trouble-free and simple.
Price of adjustable pedestals - you plan to raise the height of the ground and level its slopes and possible unevenness in other ways, then calculate the prices. If the price of the leveling plastic pedestals seems too high for you, first calculate all the costs that you will be forced to spend to level the terrace without using them. also inconvenience associated with the planned installation, and in the future the possibility of defects on terraces and balconies leveled by traditional methods.

Confront all the pros and cons with the advantages of innovative technology for the construction and installation of raised terraces, and you will quickly return to the plan of their application.

Style for the terrace

The need for outdoor recreation and communing with nature has become a very important element for many people.

Nowadays, it is visible not only in rustic-style villages but also in large agglomerations, where not only small balconies or home terraces, but also on the roofs of buildings, terraces, green roofs, and gardens with lots of greenery, shrubs in fruit trees and trees among which you can even find beehives, especially on the roofs of famous restaurants and unique buildings, such as the Paris Opera House.

There are regions of the world where relaxation in warmth is the main attraction for residents, and above all tourists. In high-standard buildings, in residences, villas, seaside resorts and hotels, swimming pools by the terrace are a highlight. We often choose rest on the swimming pool terrace on armchairs and sun loungers, under umbrellas or even in gazebos built nearby.

However, the terrace has also become a synonym of relaxation, luxury and communing with nature, where excellent weather is a rare phenomenon. You can also relax on the terraces where spring and autumn are cool, and in winter there is severe frost and snowing.

The costs of installing a ventilated terrace raised on supports made of planks and joists can cost from about PLN 70 to even PLN 100 per square meter.

Materials for building a terrace on adjustable plastic pedestals?

Taking the terrace thickness into account when designing.

Ventilated terrace tiles laid on terrace supports.

Is it possible to lay panels on adjustable pedestals?

Yes. Laying the panels on the adjustable pedestals is the best possible installation system.

It protects the floor surface on which the terrace is mounted, levels building irregularities, allows invisible routing of all necessary media under the terrace, which can be easily accessed at any time.

Levels the terrace to the desired height, and thanks to air ventilation keeps all terrace and ground elements as well as the substructure in optimal humidity.

Is the surface of the terrace tiles slippery?

Please remember that any surface covered with water may be slippery. This applies to any type of floor, including certainly boards.

Terrace boards and ceramic tiles have appropriate certificates related to anti-slip, but remember that outdoor terraces exposed to changing humidity conditions, falling dust and other pollution under the influence of water, such as roadways on which cars move, may show an increased tendency to slip.

Is the water standing on the terrace tiles

Dirt on the terrace.

Can the tiles crack when they are laying on adjustable pedestals?

What gap between the terrace tiles?

Adjustable pedestals have special spacers. joint spacers, which determine the width of the joint depending on the size selection of a given spacer joint spacers for adjustable pedestals are available in two sizes 3 mm and 5 mm.

They can be attached to the support pads system in the holes of the pedestal head of the DD Pedestals SPIRAL,   STANDARD,     MAX   series. Plugging directly into the plastic pedestals allows you to determine the width of the joints between the tiles during their leveling and installation.

Properly leveling support pads ensures consistent joints between the mounted tiles. Leveling technology using DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals, you can use interchangeable spacers 5 mm or 3 mm.

A similar solution is also a 3 mm and 5 mm joint disc that serves as a distance to obtain even gaps, also attached to the hat, but only available in the SPIRAL and MAX series   of adjustable pedestals. An additional product that allows you to create an accurate and aesthetic gap between the terrace floor and the edge is the expansion joint from the wall, e.g. at the wall, the use of which allows collision-free and proper leveling and installation of the terrace along the edge of the terraces.

Ceramic tiles / porcelain tiles

Ceramic and porcelain tiles are available in various sizes. This is a fairly wide selection that allows you to plan almost any space and arrange your property in line with the latest trends.

We should remember, however, that all the time we have paths, sidewalks and terraces. So spaces available only for pedestrians and light, non-mechanical wheeled vehicles, such as a bicycle, wheelbarrow, trolley, etc.

Porcelain tiles are by no means suitable for ramps or parking. In contrast, stoneware tiles especially recommended for installation using adjustable pedestals exhibit the following features.

Frost-resistant stoneware tiles may have a non-slip surface, long-term durability, bending resistance, stain resistance, non-absorbability, easy cleaning, and abrasion resistance.

How to cut ceramic tiles 2 cm?

Montage ceramic tiles on floors always means cutting them. To avoid losing a large amount of material and how to best cut, you need to use professional tools. Everything can be done by yourself. Only does it pay off?

Do we have financial resources to buy the necessary equipment for cutting and processing ceramic material? Do we have knowledge about the surface and hardness of our tiles? Can we handle the tools that will be needed for trimming, grinding and chamfering? Do we have a large supply of material for experiments? If so, we can plan to do it ourselves.

However, if you did not answer yes to any of the above questions, it will be safer to use the services of a professional team that will take care of placing the tiles in accordance with the art of construction and aesthetic principles.

For cutting ceramic tiles for the terrace, it is recommended to use a saw with a water-cooled diamond blade.

Destruction and damage of the old terrace

The terrace is one of the most vulnerable elements of the house structure. All because of the variable temperatures acting on it, as well as mechanical factors. Often, terrace damage can even be invisible, then they are micro-cracks.

If they are not properly preserved, they will crack over time. Therefore, the terrace should not only be carefully designed and constructed, but also properly cared for. What and how to do? What to watch out for? What should you remember about?

Cracking tiles, terrace leaks

The most common causes of problems with the tightness of the balcony or terrace include tile breaks and cracks. Tiles detachments and cracks are caused by choosing the wrong adhesive mortar or by using the wrong application method.

Good quality mortar must be deformable, and gluing should be full-surface with the application of the adhesive mortar both on the substrate and bonded tiles. If these rules are not followed, then the tiles may break and crack after the first winter season.

Ceramic tiles in your climate - the most common assembly mistakes

Here are the most common causes of tile falling off on the terrace:

- no waterproofing, no proper waterproofing of the structure,
- first manifested is salting on the tiles,  after some time the tiles will peel off;
- using the wrong tile adhesive;
- air voids under the tiles
-crumbling joints open the way for water that is already working underneath the cladding, the tiles will soon fall off;
 - too narrow joints  may cause tiles to crack;
- no proper expansion joints on the large terrace.

Why do the tiles on the terrace fall off? - Material work. Expansion and narrowing, freezing.

The cladding on the terrace or stairs on the ground must be watertight, but also vapor-permeable.

Waterproof to prevent water from entering the structure. Vapor-permeable to allow the moisture to evaporate, but it will get there. This moisture can come from a variety of sources. For example, it may be the residual water used for mixing adhesive mortars or making a concrete slab. It can also be capillary moisture from the ground, if the terrace slab does not have adequate waterproofing. Water combined with frost in winter and high temperatures in summer create enormous forces.

During the conversion of water into ice, due to the increase in its volume, there is such a great pressure from below on the porcelain tiles / ceramic tiles, etc., that it can tear them off the substrate.

The next step is to turn the water into steam. Then great forces are at work again. A high pressure builds up as the water seeks out.

As a result of water vapor pressure, the tiles on the terrace may also come off.

Material rot. Wood, moss, mushrooms and lichen.

In the case of wood as anisotropic organic material exposed to the outside and not protected against moisture, it is naturally subject to biological aging, including destruction and decay.

Unprotected wood may also form a surface mushroom and moss.

Who should make my terrace?

It is certainly best to commission the installation of a ventilated terrace to a team with extensive experience and references from customers.

However, if you have a technical sense and want to try, we have prepared a guide on how to install a ventilated terrace yourself. What to look for and lots of other useful information.

In addition, we have prepared a short instructional video that will illustrate the principle of installing a ventilated terrace on terrace supports.
You can see how a terrace made of wooden panels, also known as wooden platforms, is mounted on it. Ceramic, stone or concrete tiles are installed in the same way.

How to check the company installing terraces on adjustable pedestals before signing the contract

References from satisfied customers are very important because they increase confidence in the proper performance of assembly works, including our terrace, balcony and loggia. Before you decide to sign a contract with an executive company that is to build your terrace, it is worth checking its references.
montage terrace tiles on adjustable pedestals
References from satisfied customers are very important because they increase confidence in the proper performance of assembly works. Regardless of whether you have a large terrace in the garden or on the roof of the building, or a small balcony or loggia, it is important that the work is done correctly.

Here  you can check out a few of our hundreds of references.

Self-assembly of the terrace on the adjustable pedestals vs. professional assembly team

"If you are a fan of montage technique and have experience in construction works and in addition you want to save on montage costs, choose self-montage. Installation of the terrace on the adjustable pedestals is simple.

However, if you can spend additional funds, order a professional team."

Important information before installing the terrace onto tiles and joists

The first important information regarding the planned installation of a terrace, balcony or loggia on adjustable pedestals is the price of this product in relation to its quality. It is worth paying attention to the references of both items, in this case adjustable pedestals, and the seller himself.

Opinions and realizations made by our company can be found here.
Another important aspect that should be paid attention to is the base for the terrace. You should ask yourself whether the planned terrace, balcony or loggia can be mounted on adjustable pedestals. This means: what kind of base is it (what material is it made of, is it rigid and stable, will it withstand the pressure of adjustable pedestalls and will not collapse / blur) and what heights we have to overcome to obtain the correct level of the top surface of the finishing floor.

The use of support system for the terrace vs. traditional terrace assembly

Traditional terrace assembly may cause the substructure to fail in the future, and consequently also the terrace, especially made of wood mounted with a traditional bolt system, where the terrace board adjoins the joist.

The process of destroying such a terrace will be related to the penetration and retention of moisture on all elements used in the construction of the structure and substructure, as well as the terrace itself.

The leveled terrace on adjustable pedestals also called the ventilated terrace / raised terrace strongly prevents moisture retention, an innovative technique for constructing ventilated terraces, especially when using boards and hidden board installation systems, e.g. with the use of connectors for invisible DECK-DRY board installation, providing many years of confidence that the terrace will operate without any problems in the so-called air-dry state, which prevents the development of microorganisms, fungi and mosses.

However, this is not always possible. In many cases, the available heights on balconies or terraces do not allow the use of supports or even fixed-height supports. You can only depress the joist on small rubber sleepers. Then it is worth taking care of impeccable waterproofing and its proper protection. So that the mounted joists do not damage it for many years. The previously mentioned rubber pads or special tapes glued to the joists will certainly help.

Here we will show you a balcony with porcelain tiles glued to the ground. They were still in a condition that allowed their preservation, but it was worth additionally securing them with a special anti-leakage agent. The possibility of leaving them on the balcony floor saved the investor against additional costs in the form of tearing the tiles and leveling the surface of the balcony slab, however, such a solution did not allow for the installation of the terrace in the ventilated floor system. The available height was too small.

The cost of the terrace on supports  vs. a classically made terrace

The price of the terrace mounted on adjustable pedestals  will exceed the cost of the terrace mountage using traditional technique.

However, it should be considered whether a higher price for defect-free terrace is not more profitable for an investor who, thanks to modern technology, can use the terrace for many years without trouble and defects.

Moreover, the final cost of a terrace installed using the traditional method depends on the technical conditions of the substrate / flooring. If it is necessary to raise the terrace to a certain height and it is necessary to prepare a steel structure or pour poles and arrange double joists from thick beams, the cost may turn out to be even higher than the use of adjustable pedestals.

Each case should be considered individually.

We have prepared an article with tables specifying the estimated cost of a ventilated terrace per m2. Check it out.

How the use of adjustable pedestals replaces old technologies in construction

Construction, as an industry directly related to workmanship, is quickly introducing new and innovative technical solutions, especially those that guarantee efficient and quick assembly and faultlessness of a given product in the future.

Thanks to this, the technique of leveling ventilated terraces on adjustable pedestals largely displaces old technologies and outdated methods of their construction as unprofitable and unprofitable due to the need to repair and replace the terrace cover in the near term.

Decide whether you want a ventilated terrace raised on adjustable pedestals

A positive decision will allow the investor to "not go back to the subject" and that is why it is worth deciding on such an investment

Floor leveling scheme

How long will this terrace last? How long the terraces with adjustable pedestals last

As the adjustable pedestals are made of specially selected plastics with high resistance to biological wear, loads and temperature changes, a terrace properly leveled and mounted with the use of leveling pedestals will last a minimum of decades unchanged.

The weaker link may be the material used to cover the top layer of the terrace and the way it is used and maintained.

Differences between ceramic and porcelain plates

We associate porcelain plates with the kitchen, bathroom and other surfaces under the roof or roof.

Meanwhile, they can be one of the arrangement solutions that can be used in the home area, including paths and alleys.

Ceramic, porcelain or porcelain terrace tiles 2 cm - a bit of valuable knowledge.

There is really no clear difference between 2 cm ceramic and porcelain tiles. Ceramics and porcelain cannot be treated as two separate segments. They belong to one collection called "ceramic plates". Porcelain is one of the varieties of baked clay.

Chinese clay with more kaolinite is used for its production. Pure kaolin is a very rare material whose feature is flawless whiteness. Deposits containing more iron oxide usually have a darker color.

Clay fired at high temperatures is characterized by high resistance to water absorption.

Paving slabs on terrace support roof pedestal system

Granite paving tiles meet both of these requirements - they do not discolor, they are easy to keep clean, and when properly installed they withstand car traffic without the slightest defects.

You can comfortably walk on them in stilettos or go crazy on a scooter. Their appearance will certainly create a minimalist and modern design of the environment.

An additional advantage of granite flagstones sold on the market, both those made in sandblasting and flaming technology, is that they are trivial in cleaning and maintenance.

Granite tiles and terrace slabs will bring timeless elegance and durability to your investment.

Stone tiles - polygonal and formatted stone tiles

"Polygonal stone slabs - with features: split, irregular edges, split or cut faces (sandstone). Available: gneiss, granite, quartzite, sandstone, limestone.

Stone slabs formatted - with cut or broken edges (anti-rusted), split face ""after sawing"" (cut stone without processing), ground, polished, sanded, brushed, e.g. gneiss, granite, quartzite, sandstone. The material is very durable and easy to keep clean."

Differences in panel thicknesses and how to level them

When installing the terrace, balcony using adjustable pedestals, in the event of differences in plate thicknesses, rubber pads will be used.

Rubber pads divided into parts are used to level differences in the thickness of terrace tiles.

In the case of an uneven terrace surface resulting from the difference in the thickness of the terrace tiles, the thickness of the thickest slab should be determined and the appropriate amount of rubber washers should be placed underneath the leveling terrace support pads.

Noises while walking on a terrace made of boards - terrace acoustic properties and other sounds.

Acoustic insulation is, simply put, the ability of structural building elements (i.e. walls, ceilings, roof) to prevent sound transmission between adjacent rooms. It is worth taking care of it at every stage of the terrace or balcony construction. Please note that terraces due to their outdoor exposure are at risk of sand particles getting underneath which may cause crackling or crunching of sand particles when walking.

In the case of leveling the terrace, balcony when laying both ceramics, stone, boards or wooden and composite boards on adjustable pedestals, the SBR rubber pad is an excellent soundproofing element.

Wooden terraces

An invaluable place to rest in contact with organic material, especially for users who value the possibility of communing with natural materials. Wooden terraces and balconies are preferably leveled on adjustable pedestals.

Leveling terraces, balconies made of wood on support pads is very advantageous for several reasons: it improves installation combined with leveling, facilitates and solves the installation of so-called difficult places, thanks to the adjustable pedestals the media is carried out under the terrace without any collision and in case of need a simple open pit can be made, the terrace is ventilated from below, which increases its resistance to biological aging.

Terraces made of wood require maintenance at least once a year in order to maintain their resistance and thus resistance to biological aging. Activities related to washing, de-greasing and oiling deckboards also increase the aesthetic value of wooden terraces.

Exotic boards (hardwood)

Exotic wood used for the installation of wooden terraces is characterized by increased hardness and thus resistance to biological aging.

Regardless of the exotic wood terrace mounting system, the use of DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals and other decking components, e.g. the invisible DECK-DRY tare decking system, offers many benefits both during installation and in future use.

The most important is trouble-free leveling and ventilation of the terrace bottom.

Regional boards (softwood)

Regional wood, whose density and thus hardness is lower, is preferably leveled on DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals, which guarantee ventilation of the terrace from below.

The use of the native wood terrace mounting system on DECK-DRY terrace connectors can protect the used plank from rotting.

Installation of terrace boards

There are many ways to install wooden terraces on the market. The most popular is the traditional system using mounting screws screwed into the boards from above.

There are also so-called hidden assembly systems on the market, among others the DECK-DRY system, which is the only one that gives the board the opportunity to live in the so-called air-dry, which in combination with the leveling system on DD Pedestals support pads, especially with native wood, significantly extends the life of the terrace and balcony installed with their use.

Terrace joists

Depending on the material we use on the terrace surface and the terrace mounting system, we can use wooden joists, including exotic or native wood, composite joists, PVC including DECK-DRY PVC unpalat and steel joists, e.g. DECK-DRY ALU .

DD Pedestals support pads have a special joist adapter that prevents it from slipping.

Distance between terrace joists

The choice of the type and dimensions of the joist and the distance at which it should be mounted is usually determined by the designer, taking into account the spacing of supports for the joists, or the number of adjustable pedestals per m2 to transfer the planned loads for the terrace, balcony and plans for its use.

Installation of terrace joists

when using DD Pedestals support terrace system, also use a special joist adapter that prevents the joists from sliding out of the adjustable pedestals.

It is fastened with snaps to the upper hat of the adjustable pedestals series: SPIRAL,    STANDARD,    MAX.

Maintenance and conservation of the wood terrace

Terraces made of wood require maintenance at least once a year in order to maintain their resistance and resistance to external conditions, including moisture, sunlight, and thus resistance to biological aging.

Activities related to washing, de-greasing and oiling deckboards also increase the aesthetic value of wooden terraces.

Service and maintenance of the wooden terrace should be carried out only in certain weather conditions from May to September.

Tiles from boards for the terrace and balcony

A cheaper version of the wooden terrace for easy installation on adjustable pedestals are ready-made elements screwed into ready-made modules, most often square-shaped.

They are perfect for both large terraces and small balconies. And correctly leveled on the plastic pedestals obtain the desired height and stability.

WPC wood composite terraces

Composite decking terraces do not require complicated service and maintenance.

They resemble natural wood and require no maintenance.

Regardless of their internal structure, terraces made of composite boards can be leveled using adjustable pedestals.

Advantages of WPC composite terraces

The composite board deforms much less than the wooden board, i.e. it is more stable.

It also requires less conservation. The price of a composite board is usually lower than that of wood.

High-class composite boards are close in price to the level that you have to spend for exotic boards.

Differences between wood and composite

As a natural material, wood is friendly to the skin and gives a feeling of warmth and cosiness. Each board also has its own characteristic pattern, we will not find two identical. However, natural wood is subject to changes characteristic of materials of organic origin, e.g. it becomes covered with a patina (it turns gray) or unprotected undergoes natural decomposition.

The composite board shows higher stability and resistance to external conditions, in addition, all boards have the same structure and color, so they create a color uniform surface. Composite is also a virtually maintenance-free material.

The price of a composite board is usually lower than that of wood (with native wood, the prices are similar). High-class composite boards are approaching the price of exotic boards. Both wooden and composite terraces can and should be leveled on the adjustable pedestals.

Maintenance and conservation of the WPC composite terrace

The terrace made of composite boards is basically "maintenance-free", to increase its aesthetics you can perform pressure washing with the use of generally available means for the care of surfaces made of composite fiber

Calculation of the demand for terrace adjustable pedestals

Terrace construction

"Many years of experience in the design and installation of terraces, both made of exotic wood, composite boards and stone or ceramic tiles gives us the opportunity to propose the correctly selected substrate for a given type of terrace.

Depending on the customer's conditions, an appropriate supporting structure is made for terrace boards, stone or ceramics tiles and the subsequent construction of the terrace, including the raised / ventilated terrace."

Type of terrace - wooden terraces, composite terraces.

Terraces can be divided into many types.

Both due to the type of cladding and the type of substrate on which they are built.

And so it can be, for example, wooden terraces and terraces made of composite boards.

However, due to the foundation, it is as follows: terraces on the ground, terraces made on a concrete slab, floating / ventilated terraces leveled with the use of adjustable pedestals without the need to anchor to the ground.

Seamless terraces

It is a technology for securing terrace substrates thanks to seamless insulation, e.g. insulating slurries, bituminous insulations, polyurethane insulation, pool paints.

Safety seamlessness guarantees an even surface thanks to which the next terrace layers can be laid and leveled e.g. on adjustable bedestals for additional stability and lack of inequality.

Balcony type

Balconies are an architectural element constituting an integrating part of the building. There are three main types of balconies due to the construction.

The most common are balconies:
1. cantilever,
2. slightly less often placed on an independent supporting structure, separated from the building
3. and suspended.

Terrace waterproofing / Hydroisolation

Due to the ubiquity of moisture in the construction of the terrace, balcony, loggias, proper waterproofing is very important. The design of balconies and terraces must be designed and constructed in such a way as to ensure their safe use.

One of the main conditions for the durability of these elements is to prevent the ingress of moisture and water into the structure.

Waterproofing, which is a barrier against the penetration of water and moisture into the structure of the balcony or terrace is also a protection against corrosion of the structural board, leaks and the development of microorganisms.

The investor should choose waterproofing materials according to such criteria as the type of structural element (balcony or terrace) and the scope of work of the ground - the larger the surface, the more applied materials should have greater flexibility.

Correct insulation of the balcony and terrace, which protects against water penetration into the structure, is of particular importance when the terrace is located directly above the room, for example the living room. Water entering the structure results in moisture in the ceiling and creating conditions inside the building for the development of biological corrosion, e.g. fungi and mold.

The terraces are constantly exposed to atmospheric factors - rain, snow, strong sunlight and variable temperature. Especially the temperature in our climate is not very friendly for construction - every year it exceeds the 0 ° C limit at least several dozen times, causing alternately freezing and thawing of materials, and thus their swelling and shrinkage. In this way, all not exactly sealed places where water leaks break, leading to gradual destruction of the structure.

As subsequent layers cover those previously laid, any defects are difficult to fix. It's easy to hide or overlook them. They will only make themselves felt when there is a leak inside the house.

Terrace thermal isolation

Another very important fragment of the substrate preparation for the terrace, especially in places where the terrace, balcony, loggia is planned over the existing room. Thermal isolation allows savings in terms of heat loss.

Decline and slope of the terrace, drains

It does not matter whether it is a terrace on the ground or above the room. Everyone must have a suitable slope to drain the rainwater from the terrace floor. What should the terrace fall down like?

The terrace surface should be shaped with a slope outside, i.e. it must fall away from the building wall. A terrace fall of 1-2% (1-2 cm per meter in length) is considered sufficient.

Such a decrease in the terrace surface is practically imperceptible to the eye, and very important for the life of the terrace.

It prevents the penetration of rainwater or coming from melting snow into the building interior, moisture of the building walls, and also facilitates the free drainage of water.

It is unacceptable for the terrace to fall toward the building - then its wall is exposed to moisture, and puddles may form when entering the terrace.

Incorrectly made terrace fall

It results in: dampness of the base, peeling and destruction of the terrace cladding, leakage through the terrace slab, flooding of the room located under the terrace.

Leveling on adjustable pedestals allows you to level the terraces, balconies, loggias in accordance with all recommendations and protections for insulation including EPDM and jointless and obtain the correct slopes for water outflow, which is a condition for the proper functioning of the terrace surface.

Substrate for setting up terrace adjustable pedestals.

Ventilated terrace is a technology that can be used both on the ground, but also on old and new concrete screeds. Making such a terrace is economical and easy to assemble.

Do ventilated terraces have only advantages?

It seems that is right. Their construction is simple and cheap, so you can do it yourself. Plus, it's easy to replace damaged components and the flexibility of the surface on which the terrace will stand.

The construction of the ventilated terrace consists of plates mounted on special support terrace system placed on a stable surface. In the space between the terrace surface and the ground there will be space for necessary installations, which you can run even after the terrace is made.

All media will be under the terrace without a collision and you always have the opportunity to trouble-free outcrop. Raising the terrace above the ground makes it possible to drain rainwater, and the surface is hardy. Terrace tiles are laid on the adjustable pedestals.

Their installation is quick and simple, and if it needs to be replaced during use, there is no problem. The tiles, similarly to the adjustable pedestals, were removed, provided they had no mechanical damage or destruction, and are suitable for re-use, e.g. elsewhere.
The construction of a ventilated terrace can be divided into two stages. The first is to prepare the substrate, the second is to lay tiles, boards or ceramics on terrace supports pads or adjustable pedestals.

It should be remembered that during the preparation of the substrate to ensure adequate water drainage - that is, shape the slopes to the outside. The substrate should also be protected against unfavorable weather conditions, for example with heat-welded roofing felt - the corners should be carefully sealed.

We begin setting up the adjustable pedestals on the prepared base. These adjustable pedestals are made of appropriate plastics. They carry loads / ranges specified by the manufacturer, both at positive and negative temperatures / the temperature range is given by the manufacturer /. In addition, the adjustable pedestals do not bend or bend and are resistant to damage. The height of the support will determine the height of your ventilated terrace. However, they are selected mainly depending on the substrate. There are three types of terrace plastic pedestals heights available on the market:

1.  Support pads for terrace tiles with a fixed height (not adjustable)

2. Adjustable pedestals with standard heights and strength parameters, suitable for most utility terraces

3. Adjustable pedestals with high heights and increased strength parameters, intended for specialized buildings, e.g. industrial or collective utility buildings

How to prepare the ground for terrace roof pedestal system

The ground (foundation) for each planned terrace should be stable. In addition, it is preferable for the ground to be even, because the terrace can be laid / mounted directly on such ground. If the ground / foundation is uneven / and a leveling element should be used (e.g. DD PEDESTALS adjustablepedestals). The durability of the terrace structure depends on the properly prepared substrate.

Sand and cement base

Each construction should be adapted to the function it will fulfill. Terraces should be adapted to the needs of the owner. Those skilled in the art will certainly advise you on the design of the ballast for a specific construction and these design recommendations, including material choices, should not be ignored. What counts is quality and professionalism.

Groundwork - sand, cement or gravel?

The choice should be well thought out and suited to the project. In loose condition, the selected ballast should be leveled and its thickness adjusted to the needs of the surface. Your choice will allow you to finish the construction and enjoy the effects. After all, you want the effect to be lasting!

Concrete screed

"The screed on the terrace should not be made without good preparation. It is easy to overdo with the amount of concrete poured, which can result in an uneven terrace.

Surely we must always take into account the thickness of the material that we plan to lay on the screed. Especially when the terrace exit is connected with the entrance to the building, and the balcony door opens outwards, it is quite important.

Before making a screed on the terrace, you need to prepare a primer with proper isolation. In the past, this concept was not known in construction and many buildings began to destroy because of the lack of proper isolation at the base, and the terrace can also directly adhere to the ground. A screed may also be needed when we want to create columns for terrace construction."

Heat-sealable hydroisolation

Heat-sealable roofing hydroisolation is a well-known insulation material used for roofing, foundation insulation, waterproofing terraces or balconies. Heat-welded roofing felt is becoming more and more popular, replacing roofing felt with traditional adhesive.

Heat-sealable roofing hydroisolation - characteristics

Heat-weldable roofing felt consists of several layers: topping, bitumen top layer, support matrix, bottom / bottom bitumen layer, release film. Heat-weldable roofing felt is glued by melting the bitumen on the bottom layer with a burner.

They have a factory-prepared plant that allows for quick tight connections of individual roofing felt strips, so well-laid waterproofing from roofing felt is durable.

It should also be remembered that the adhesive melts at 70 ° C, so the roof covering must be resealed every few years. Heat-sealable roofing felt has much better properties and does not require renovation for a long time.

Liquid hydroisolation

Also called liquid foil. Is liquid film really a film? In fact, it is rather a specialist product based on synthetic resins, which, after drying, has sealing properties - anti-moisture and anti-moisture, just like real foil.

However, while it is difficult to imagine ordinary film as a material that would isolate elements from moisture for a long period - the liquid film is created just for such applications.

EPDM rubber isolation

EPDM is a synthetic rubber (rubber) belonging to the group of elastomers. EPDM is an abbreviation of the English name of the main membrane component, i.e. ethylene propylene diene monomer.
Other components of EPDM rubber are: technical carbon black, silt, technical oil, sulfur, stabilizers.

This rubber is formed in the vulcanization process. The main advantages of EPDM: high flexibility in very low temperatures, high elasticity and extensibility, pressure resistance, dimensional stability, high durability, easy installation, chemical resistance and environmental friendliness.

Hardness of XPS isolation boards when using adjustable pedestals

- for styrodur XPS - 200, the allowable compressive stress at deformation up to 10% is 200 kPa. Converting Kilopascals to kg / cm ^ 2 we have 200 kPa = 2 kg / cm ^ 2. So it turns out that we can put a load of up to 357 kg on one bracket.

  - for styrodur XPS - 300, the allowable compressive stress with a deformation of up to 10% is 300 kPa. Converting kilopascals to kg / cm ^ 2 we have 200 kPa = 3 kg / cm ^ 2. So it turns out that we can put a load of up to 535.5 kg on one bracket. The above applies to the Standard series.

How to finish the edge of the terrace?

Drip cap, gutters, balustrade, the correct execution of all layers of the terrace does not guarantee that there will be no damage over time. If the edges are not carefully finished and the space along the walls of the house ineffectively sealed - the terrace can leak and destroy.

Drip cap - The edge of the terrace must always be ended with a drip cap in the form of a sheet apron, which projects 3-5 cm beyond the edge of the terrace tile. It protects not only against the formation of stains on the wall or pedestal, but above all protects against water penetration under the surface. The drip caps are attached directly to the tile adhesive layer, the part extending under the tiles should be perforated to allow good adhesion. An appropriately shaped coated aluminum sheet or system profiles adapted to draining the terrace are used as the drip cap.

Gutter installation - on large, uncovered roofed terraces, gutters are mounted along the lowest edge. This will prevent streaks that could be caused by rainwater on the façade, which always flushes dirt from the terrace surface. The gutters are mounted at the lowest edge of the surface slope, but on larger terraces it is also worth mounting the gutters on its sides. The edges of the terrace should be finished with metal aprons directing rainwater to the inside of the gutter.

Terrace railing installation - Railing seating

How to properly place the railing on the balcony tiles?
How to do it so that the terrace does not leak?
Which railing to choose?
How to match it to our small balcony or large roof terrace?

A common cause of terrace leakage is improper seating of the balustrade posts. Due to their strength, they should be embedded in the terrace tiles, which breaks the continuity of the waterproofing. It is therefore necessary to apply a sealing layer of silicone (in the form of a conical ring surrounding the post) where the posts are mounted.

Another good solution is to attach the posts not to the top of the terrace tiles, but to the bottom or to the leading edge. Without disturbing the waterproofing. The balustrade embedding system was introduced, among others, by the DECK-DRY company, balustrades anchored to the grate made of joists, so as not to enter the waterproofing. So that the railing is rigid and solidly fixed without invading the terrace substrate.

Balustrades on balconies are often already adapted to the installation of tiles in the ventilated terrace system. They have a steel angle on which the pavers can be supported.
That solutions are most often used on development assumptions, where already at the design stage, the architect planned a raised floor system and angles are already included in the bill of materials.

These solutions definitely facilitate the assembly of the panels. They constitute an ideal edge limitation for a slab floor.

Often, these strips are mounted to the balustrade posts (whether from the outside or inside, depending on the system) and it can be done at any time of work. Also at the time of installation of the ceramic cladding on balconies.

Connection of terrace layers with the building wall

Correct execution of this connection is important for the tightness and durability of the terrace. The basic condition is that 10-15 cm damp isolation is erected on the wall of the house.

If waterproofing is being laid during renovation, in the form of roofing felt on an inheritance layer, it should also be erected on the wall, with an oblique filling in the corner that allows for gentle bending of isolation.

However, in the case of tile isolation, an isolaiting tape insert is glued in the corner, and a layer of liquid film is applied to the wall. Due to protection against dirt as well as additional protection against water ingress, the wall strip near the terrace floor should be covered with ceramic tiles.

They must not come into direct contact with the terrace surface - at the contact with the wall we leave an expansion gap (filled with an expansion cord, covered with a layer of silicone). The top edge of the plinth tiles is also secured with silicone or acrylic mass.

Attic around the terrace

The attic is a structural part that closes the space of a balcony or terrace from the outside. Usually it has the form of a characteristic wall. In modern construction, attics are most often found on flat roofs, however, they are increasingly used on terraces and balconies. Attics can have different heights.

The most important, however, is the function they perform. First of all: the attic closes the thermal insulation of the balcony or terrace. It is also a type of water restriction. Low attic walls are ideal for mounting railings. High can be an alternative to railings, while being an effective architectural element.

Thanks to the attic on the terrace or balcony, the continuity of insulation layers is ensured - all thanks to the fact that it is not necessary to install balustrades and eaves profiles.

The window frame at the terrace

Wall and facade as a terrace edge

Home terraces can be done in many ways. One of the most popular is to make a concrete terrace tiles on a layer of compacted sand, leaning against the edges of concrete blocks, built on a foundation block. It does not matter if the terrace is adjacent to only one wall or to two - in the corner of the house.

Just like stairs, the terrace should also be separated from the house structure - preferably it will only touch the isolation of foundation walls made of extruded polystyrene or hard foamed polystyrene.

Also the benches on which the walls surrounding the terrace will be built of concrete blocks should be recessed in the ground (especially the ground floor) to a depth equal to the freezing zone of the soil. Since the concrete slab of the terrace is peripherally supported on these walls, it would not be good if it was broken due to frost linings lifting its edges.

Terrace covers

Terrace masking covers can be described as a curtain for the side and end parts of the terrace. These are usually elements attached to the side edges of the front part or to its bottom in order to mask the so-called terrace substructure. For example, leveling performed on adjustable pedestals.
The terrace covers can be made of many different materials depending on what the terrace is covered with: wooden planks cut to the appropriate width, ready-made composite masking strips, terrace tiles, curbs or even stone.

Masking the edge of the terrace can also be a suitable type of plants planted on the perimeter of the terrace, which will also serve as a cover for the substructure.

Ventilated terrace eaves profiles

The correct finish of the hood is a condition of a durable terrace or balcony. The eaves profile should have anti-corrosive coatings appropriate for the application and a structure that ensures the tightness of the eaves.

Ventilated floors are currently the most dynamically developing technology used in the construction of terraces and balconies.

This technology owes its development to simple workmanship, lack of rigid and glued joints, and high durability.

For the proper functioning of a ventilated floor, eaves profiles are necessary, which act as a support for floor panels and ensure proper drainage of the floor.

Terrace borders

Terrace borders are the latest generation of multifunctional edges, forming a stable, aesthetic crowning arrangement of terrace surfaces.

The solution based on a simple, innovative mechanism and durable material, allows for quick and effective finishing of also irregular terrace systems.

Used on gravel, grass and concrete surfaces, they are perfectly suited various types of terrace cubes.

In addition, after cutting out the lateral bridges, they can be installed even in compositions based on the shape of the arch. Edges also work as expansion joints.

The foundation for terraces on joists

It should be designed and constructed according to the planned terrace surface. Suitable for wooden, composite boards, ceramics tiles or every other terrace tiles. Also depends on the type of floor or building conditions.

So always chosen properly for the planned terrace or balcony, depending on its purpose and loads.
The foundation can be different.

Starting with the old floors, such as old paving stones or old ceramic tiles glued to the substrate (remember not to leak - if so, repair any damage and leakage points and then install the new cladding).

Other solutions are openwork slabs, concrete rims and blocks or even old concrete tiles placed directly under the support to distribute its point pressure on the ground.

The most stable and the most common are concrete screeds, whether covered with tar paper or without it, because if there are no rooms under the terrace slab, there is no need to protect the screed with heat-weldable tar paper or other waterproofing. On inverted roofs, gravel is usually scattered on large development assumptions on the roof, which should be spread apart before the brackets are set apart for stability. here are some photos from our projects.

Aluminium Joists

Aluminum joists are most often used for structures that need greater stiffness, also often used for investments in the case of the need for NRO for the entire facility. Aluminum joists are often required for higher loads on terraces, depending on the load-bearing capacity of the material used, and also where it is necessary to change the structure.

Wooden joists

Wooden joists are mainly used in the construction of terraces made of wooden boards. The type of wood of the joists is selected with parameters similar or the same as the material used on the terrace. The most important principle is: the structural joist cannot be of a lower class than the facing boards, as it will not maintain the stiffness of the entire terrace. It is very important. Failure to comply with this requirement will result in board deformation, linearity changes, keying, etc.

Composite joists

Composite joists, whether PVC or HDPE, are selected according to the material used or the terrace montage system. They are used, for example, in the concealed mounting system DECK-DRY (because this is how the system predisposes). It is also advantageous to use composite joists in the construction of ventilated terraces on DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals. The uniformity of the materials facilitates the selection of other elements, e.g. screws.

Joist frame construction

Such a substructure frame structure made of joists is a very important element of decked terraces. Both composite and wooden.

The necessity to make the frame is generated by the technical parameters of the boards used, as well as the estimated and designed external load generated on the finished terrace. If it is planned to place heavy elements on the deck, the joist frame structure should be properly compacted.

The frame stiffens the structure and prevents material distortions.

The design of the stairs on the adjustable pedestals

Terrace partition

Made to maintain privacy as a decorative element, as a separation of the terrace / balcony size for individual residential premises.

Balcony partitions are usually attached to the ceiling tiles both from the bottom and from the top, so that they are, firstly, made stable and secondly that their assembly elements are hidden under the floor finish. It happens, however, that they are attached to the wall, which is also a very good solution.
Adjustable pedestals with and without height adjustment - depending on the needs, we divide the leveling pedestals, i.e. those whose heights can be adjusted or stacked and those whose height is constant.
Fixed height support terrace pads system for terrace tiles with a constant height of 2 mm for laying under terrace tiles to stabilize corners and gaps between the tiles.

Fixed height support pads Terrace support pads for slabs are pads that are not adjustable in height, stackable ""one on top of the other"" in stacks, max. 3 pieces as adjustable in steps, used for mounting (supporting) ceramic, concrete and stone slabs. Among them are several types available for different applications.

Adjustable pedestals SPIRAL series- height range allows leveling in the range of 10-30 mm

Adjustable pedestals STANDARD series- bolt-adjustable ""smoothly"" in the height range of 30-420 mm

Adjustable pedestals MAX series - screw-smoothly adjustable in the height range 150-950 mm

Adjustable pedestals comparison

If you are wondering which series of terrace pedestals will be perfect for your terrace, we have prepared a list that will quickly explain to you all the relationships between each series. There you will find the basic advantages of each series, check what additional accessories you can use for individual brackets or even the height and load ranges.

Support pads in constant high

If the terrace floor is part of it, i.e. it does not have any recesses, unevenness, holes and it does not depend on its floor being at the level used, use a support pads for terrace tiles of constant height.

These stands under the terrace tiles cover above the terrace ground and fix the gap between the slabs. This is the most basic solution when installing ventilated terraces.
If you plan to lay terrace tiles on a stable place, i.e. sand and cement bedding, compacted aggregate. In addition, we do not want to use glues and mortars for boards so that there is no need for their grouting.

In this case, washers for dry laying on gravel will work best. These washers with a thickness of only 2 mm ensure a gap between the panels for free drainage of water and at the same time keep the corners of the panels at the same height so that the panels will lie evenly.
More on how to install a gravel terrace yourself  is described here.

Low-altitude terrace vs. high terrace

DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals can be divided into low and high level.

The first, i.e. low adjustable pedestals with adjustable height, are the SPIRAL  series - from 10 to 30 mm.

However, two series of adjustable pedestals: STANDARD 30-420 mm and MAX 45-950 mm are intended for high-altitude terraces.

You can find more information about each series by clicking on their names.

Base slope corrector in relation to the terrace drop

The correction of the slope generated on the terrace slab can be compensated in two ways:

1. by using the LE 0-7% self leveling head

2. or by using the SC slope corrector 0-8%

LE self leveling head 0-7%

The innovative solution of the DD PEDESTALS self leveling head makes the adjustable pedestals automatically adjust to the floor level up to a 7% inclination. The self leveling head allows for even faster leveling of the terrace and better support for the floor laid on the terrace. Self leveling heads are available for both Standard and Max series adjustable pedestals.

Slope corrector SC 16MM 0-8%

In the case of larger slopes on the terrace or installation of tall structures, it is necessary that the adjustable pedestals is positioned vertically. Then, the transferred loads act axially on the support, thanks to which it retains its full stability and its strength parameters.
In addition, the base slope corrector comes in handy. It has a smooth adjustment and has the ability to compensate for slopes in the range of 0-8% of the slope. The base inclination corrector can be used simultaneously with the self-leveling head, which allows to achieve safe slope correction together up to 14% of the ground inclination.
A terrace on tile support pads is the cheapest and simplest type of ventilated terrace. Such a system allows you to quickly arrange the terrace without gluing - dry. Such a floor is ready for use immediately after installation. It does not require drying or setting of the mortars.

Thanks to the various types and heights of tiles support pads, we are able to match our terraces with ones that meet our requirements. The tiles are not permanently attached to the bases, therefore their possible disassembly is as fast as the assembly was performed. Such a system will work well in the assembly of stands for several hours of speeches or for seasonal gardens.

The tile support pads have a constant height, which makes their installation as simple as possible. They are available in four different heights: 8, 10, 15 and 16 mm.

The possibility of stacking allows you to achieve a greater height of the ventilated terrace.

Adjustable pedestals for joists

DD Pedestals terrace adjustable pedestals are suitable for mounting terraces made of tiles as well as boards and joists. Be it composite or wooden. It doesn't matter. The joist used is also irrelevant - it can be made of wood, composite, WPC, aluminum or steel. It then remains to choose the appropriate screw to attach the joist to the adjustable pedestal. Special adapters have been designed for such installation.
Ventilated terraces made of boards can be mounted on any series of adjustable pedestals, ie SPIRAL, STANDARD, MAX, and also specially designed for terraces made of boards and joists of the RAPTOR series. Only fixed-height supports are suitable for mounting terraces made of tiles, whether ceramic, stone or concrete.

High of adjustable pedestals

Do you want to use adjustable leveling pedestals on your ventilated terrace but do not know the ranges of available pedestals? Or maybe you don't know how to properly regulate their height? Here are some tips.

Terrace pedestals are divided into:
- those with a fixed height (low to the tiles)
- and adjustable (high for tiles and joists)

Here is a series of SUPPORT PADS

These are the heights of the SPIRAL SERIES adjustable pedestals

This is the STANDARD SERIES series

This is MAX SERIES

And when it comes to adjusting the height of the adjustable pedestals, it's best to do it with both hands. You hold one of the pedestals stationary and the other one is held by the ring on the sleeve and you turn it until the desired height is obtained.

Height of adjustable pedestals with a key from above

The only possible way to adjust the level of the terrace tiles placed on the adjustable pedestal after the assembly is finished, of course without having to disassemble it, is to use a key to adjust the height.

Thanks to the use of a metal key to adjust the height, you can correct any unevenness even on the already laid floor without the need to remove the tiles from the terrace. Just insert the key into the gap between the tiles and turn it and the adjustable pedestals will change height up or down accordingly. Sometimes it is good to be able to improve the work done previously without having to dismantle the entire terrace.

Increasing the height range of adjustable pedestals.

The height range of the DD Pedestals is very easy to adjust. In each series. Be it Standard, Spiral, Raptor wedge-shaped or reinforced MAX adjustable pedestals. Each of the series adjusts very smoothly and easily.

We have prepared a short instructional video for you, showing you how to correctly fold the adjustable pedestal, how to adjust it and how to use additional elements.

You will find it here.

Horizontal and diagonal bracing of the support pads

The stiffening of the adjustable pedestals requires terraces that are raised to considerable heights and it is the height that generates the risk of destabilization.

Our MAX adjustable pedestals system has the option of additional stabilization, of course, when it is needed.
The system allows for mounting horizontal beams connecting the bases. This prevents the adjustable pedestals from moving relative to each other, e.g. during unforeseen dynamic loads. Such mutual stabilization can be used, for example, at greater heights or in places where it is not possible to attach the brackets to the ground. Additionally, the support bases and the DS MAX 200 spacer sleeves have special holes through which the bracing strings can be led. Such additional diagonal bracing causes the entire floor structure to be mutually stiffened. The use of stabilizing beams and stiffening bracings is particularly useful when laying tall structures.

NRO self-extinguishing adjustable pedestals

Are you wondering what the self-extinguishing adjustable pedestals NRO fire classification of terrace supports means in practice? What classes of fire retardation can be distinguished and what do the individual markings define?

We've explained everything in this article.

Windproof system for adjustable pedestals

The system of adjustable pedestals MAX has the option of permanently fixing the entire structure to the ground, together with the laid floor. This solution prevents the tiles from lifting up in the event of extremely strong winds capable of lifting heavy elements. The solution uses a special screw with metal caps that are attached to the surface of the board or in the place of the cut of the board. All elements of the adjustable pedestals are inseparable and stick to the threads. The adjustable pedestals with the tiles can be attached to the ground or, if this is not possible, glued with a durable glue.

Durability of adjustable pedestals for terrace tiles against loads

Static loads vs. dynamic terrace loads

The permissible loads depend on the type of adjustable pedestals and the series it comes from.

Yes, also for support pads with a fixed height the permissible load is up to ~ 2,000 kg / pc.

Similarly, in the SPIRAL series it is ~ 2000 kg / pc.

The STANDARD series is, depending on the height of the adjustable pedestals, 925-1141 kg / pcs.

However, for the reinforced adjustable pedestals of the MAX  series, these values range from 1,176 kg to 1,675 kg.

Detailed information on permissible loads
The adjustable pedestals are provided with the detailed specifications
technical - ask your supplier about it.

Temporary overload

In the event of a temporary overload of the adjustable pedestals, the technical condition of these adjustable pedestals should be inspected.
There are also restrictions on the use of terraces based on adjustable pedestals:

It is forbidden to enter the terrace with motor vehicles, which can cause unpredictable dynamic loads
It is forbidden to place heavy objects, the weight of which exceeds the permissible load. If there is a need to set up a heavy object, such as a jacuzzi, strength calculations should be made.
Forbidden of activities that could cause dynamic loads exceeding the permissible loads.

Adjustable pedestal adjustment by means of a thread

Terrace adjustable pedestals regulated with a thread are three of our series of pedestals - the SPIRAL, STANDARD and MAX series.

Thread adjustment is the fastest solution to determine the final and appropriate height of each terrace pedestal. By turning the nut on the bolt, we adjust the height of the bolt protrusion both up and down.

We have prepared an instructional video that will explain the assembly of the adjustable pedestal as well as the thread adjustment itself.

What types of adjustable pedestals are there in the world

Arrangement of adjustable pedestal on the terrace

The adjustable pedestals on the terrace are usually spaced according to the dimensions of the tiles.

Usually it is a simple layout - boards in even rows and columns. This makes it possible to support 4 edges of adjacent tiles on one adjustable pedestal.

The tiles on the adjustable pedestals can also be arranged in a staggered arrangement. In the so-called brick. Then three tiles will lay on each adjustable pedestal - the edges of two + the middle part of one of them.

Of course, DD Pedestals adjustable pedestals can also be used to support joists under a deck of boards. Be it wooden boards as well as composite boards. It does not matter what material the joists are made of - they can be wooden, composite, PVC, aluminum, etc. The spacing between one and the other support depends on the strength of the joists - depending on their thickness, the spacing may vary. Usually, standard joists have a height of about 5 cm and for this size, the spacing of the adjustable pedestals is about 40-50 cm.

-How much adjustable pedestals are needed per square meter of terrace

When preparing the terrace design, it will be necessary to calculate the number of terrace supports to be used. The final number of adjustable pedestals needed will depend on how densely the adjustable pedestals are spaced apart on the terrace.

That is, what grid of brackets will be set (what distance will be between the adjustable pedestals).

The distance between the adjustable pedestals depends on the type of floor and the planned terrace load.

If, for example, 60x60 cm terrace ceramic tiles are laid on the terrace, then the adjustable pedestals will be spaced every 60 cm between each other.

For example, if they are wooden terrace joists, the spacing between the adjustable pedestals will be e.g. 50-60 cm. On this basis, we are able to calculate how many terrace adjustable pedestals are needed per 1 m2 of terrace.

The table showing the needs of brackets per 1 m2 can be found here in pdf format.

- Should the adjustable pedestals be attached to the ground?

There is no need for the terrace adjustable pedestals to be permanently attached to the ground. They stand steadily under the influence of the weight of the tiles, joists or pavers.

Usually, a layer of waterproofing is lined on the ground, which additionally prevents us from anchoring the support pads to the ground. It cannot be damaged. In addition, additional rubber pads are used for protection. But more about them here.

However, if there is a risk of the support legs moving, they should be secured against movement. Attaching the adjustable pedestals with screws is the surest way to fix it. However, if there is waterproofing on the substrate, the terrace support pads can be glued to frost-resistant glue.

Freezing water in winter.

If the adjustable pedestals are immersed in water (e.g. in a fountain), let them out before the frost sets in.

To prevent the water from freezing in the terrace support pads, make a small hole in the base so that the water can flow out freely while draining the tank for winter.

Installation the adjustable pedestals on the terrace.

The adjustable pedestals on the terrace are arranged in any configuration. Their spacing generates the size of the selected tiles or the thickness of joists and tiles.

We have explained how to correctly install the terrace support pads under the ventilated terrace in this article.
